Gising gising is one of Filipino's popular dishes that is known for its creamy, spicy, tasty, and, savory flavor. The dish is made with chopped green beans, Baguio beans or string beans (sitaw), minced or ground meat, and coconut milk. It is usually paired with cooked rice.

Finish dish of gising gising in a bowl, ready to eat.

Gising-gising is a tagalog word for wake up, wake up which means the dish's spicy flavor that wakes up the senses. It sounds funny, but there is truth to this word. Some variations of the recipe use other vegetables like kangkong (water spinach), or winged beans, instead of green beans. Gising Gising is often enjoyed as a main dish, but it can also be served as a side dish or appetizer.

    Why you will love this

    • Gising Gising is a flavorful and delicious dish that is popular spicy and savory in the Filipino menu. The combination of coconut milk, ground meat, and sliced green beans creates a perfectly creamy, filling, and satisfying flavor that will satisfy everyone.
    • Gising Gising is relatively simple to make, and it requires just a few ingredients that are easily accessible. Cooking techniques are also easy to follow. With just a few simple steps, you can prepare this tasty and satisfying dish for your friends, family, and neighbors.
    • This dish is for you if you love spicy meat and green beans recipe that is similar to Bicol Express. You can still make this dish if you do not like spicy food by skipping serrano pepper and red chili in this dish, specially for younger kids.

    Instructions

Step by step instructions to cook gising-gising.

Start by gathering and preparing all your ingredients for this dish. Minced your garlic and sliced your onions thinly. Slice your green beans and jalapeno lengthwise with the same sizes.

    1. In a skillet over medium heat with cooking oil, saute onion and garlic until aromatic.
    2. Then add ground beef and shrimp paste, and cook until the meat is lightly brown. Stir occasionally to make sure the meat is cooked evenly. You can use a wooden spatula to break the meat into tiny pieces
    3. Add coconut milk and bring it to a gentle boil for about 5 minutes. Some people, like their coconut sauce thicker. But, it will thicken more once it is completely cool down.

What to serve with the dish

Since this is similar to bicol express, we love to serve this yummy and spicy dish with rice, garlic fried rice, or mushroom fried rice on the side! It is still yummy on it's own but I also like to serve this with some noodles such as pancit bihon, pancit bihon and canton, or more steamed veggies.
