Want to learn how to make dehydrated Swiss Chard Powder for smoothies, salads, soups, and more? It’s easy to make a dehydrated green powder from leafy greens.

A tablespoon of swiss chard powder.

Super green veggie powder is my secret to staying healthy for powering through the mountain of greens that pile into our kitchen from our garden, market, and CSA.

    How to make green powder

Pick and wash your greens. Remove any middle thick stems or ribs (especially for the larger, more mature leaves). Be sure to pat dry them with a towel. Then lay them out on the dehydrator trays. Turn the dehydrator on the 125F - 130F heat setting and let it sit for several hours or overnight. Check it several times. You can switch the top layer to the bottom layer tray from time to time to dehydrate them evenly.

You will know when they are ready when they crumble easily between your fingers. Sometimes, I like to use my hand and tear them into tiny pieces and then throw them in a food processor to blend into powder greens.

You can use a blender, food processor, or mortar and pestle to blend them into a powder. I find that using a food processor is more efficient, but mortar and pestle will make them into fine powder.

    Ways to use Green Powder

There are so many ways to add some swiss chard powder to our food without noticing the taste. You can almost add it to everything you are eating. The key is to add just enough green powder and not overdo it.

    1. Add 1 teaspoon to make rolls or pandesal.
    2. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons to a cup of heated bone broth or egg drop soup, along with a handful of chopped fresh greens. Simmer, covered, till greens are tender.
    3. Sprinkle some of it on cook rice or fried rice.
    4. Add a teaspoon or more to marinate any type of meat.
    5. Sprinkle over salad or in your salted egg salad with tomatoes, avocado shrimp salad, and cucumber salad.
    6. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons to your favorite green smoothie.
    7. Add a tablespoon to summer guacamole.
    8. Mix a half-teaspoon or so into your pickles, such as cherry tomato pickles.
    9. Add this swiss chard green powder to season soups such as mushroom soup
    10. Sprinkle some to make baked lemon herb salmon.

    Storage Tips

Preserving your leafy green harvest by making green powder is such a great way to keep it for a long time without taking up so much space in your kitchen. All you need is a clean jar with a tight lid. Make sure that the container is dry and clean before placing your green powder in it to keep it away from the mold. It will stay potent for 6-12 months in a cool, dark, and dry place.
